MYTHS AND LEGENDS
According to legends, the city got its name from a mythical youth, U Shyllong (the one who grows naturally). U Shyllong was in fact the presiding deity of Shillong and the phrase ‘Khot Shyllong’ (Call to Shillong) is still used as a prayer in times of catastrophe, peril or even personal misfortune.
HISTORY
Welcome to the city of Rock n Roll! This land has come a long, long way to be where it’s at right now. Shillong started out as the capital of Assam and later became the capital of Meghalaya, after the Hill State Movement. The uniqueness of the people involves the languages spoken with lost scripts, the Matrilineal way of life and a different belief system which focuses on pagan traditional ideas while remaining modern. The rolling hills around the town and the 4 seasons in a day reminded the Britishers of Scotland and hence gave Shillong the nickname “The Scotland of the East”.

WARD'S LAKE
One of the most popular attractions of shillong, and is home to the cherry blossoms trees as well as the 'living fossil tree' which is the oldest living tree species in the world.
RAJ BHAWAN
This is a 117-year-old structure which was rebuilt after one of the strongest earthquakes in the world to be a wooden architectural wonder of the state. The corridors of this house have shaped the history of the region.
SHILLONG CLUB
A gentlemen's club built by the british high society. It endured two raging fires only to be rebuilt and has housed the maharaja of manipur, dacca, tripura, and himachal pradesh among many other regals from the old world indian kingdoms.
OLD LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY
For the first time, assam had allowed a legislative council with the chief commissioner as the president. This was the first legislative building, which was completed by early 1923 and burned to the ground in a major fire in 2001.
POLICE BAZAAR
Also known as 'khyndai lad' which translates to 'where 9 lanes meet'. It is the centre of hustling bustling shillong famous for its street food, and shopping while also having symbolic meanings as this square has seen the start of multiple local revolutions.
JAIL ROAD
As the name suggests, this road leads to the local jail. The old world bengali charm of shillong can still be seen here. Rabindranath tagore and subhas chandra bose have also walked down this road while fighting for indias freedom!
ASSEMBLY LIBRARY
This was one of the first legislative buildings, which was completed by 1923. This is also where the british legislative council was dissolved in 1947 - replaced by the constituent assembly of india.
KJPA CHRUCH
This church was built for services in english for christians who didn't speak the khasi language. Opened in 1923, the church with its central surroundings has played a large part in the cultural changes in shillong.
BRAHMO SAMAJ
This institution which was built in 1874 is a representation of how multicultural shillong joined hands to change the education of the rural people and increase the furtherance of the brahmo cause.
POLO GROUNDS
From the sport of polo to the local gambling sport of archery, to the modern indian football club of shillong lajong, these sports grounds have been a major part of the city. The 2016 south asian games were also hosted here.
BUDDHIST MONASTERY
The oldest buddhist temple in the region has an archway similar to the world-famous sanchi stupa. This represents the diversity and secular nature of shillong since time immemorial.
GOLF COURSE
Shillong golf links is one of the oldest and only naturally landscaped 18-hole golf courses in asia. It is considered to be the "glen-eagle of the east". The course is uniquely open for the locals to use when the members are not playing.
