Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival

In autumn, Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, transforms into a mesmerising Sakura wonderland as thousands of cherry blossoms paint the landscape in shades of pink. This breathtaking spectacle draws tourists from across the country, with the autumn-winter months being the best time to experience Meghalaya’s raw beauty and witness the blooming cherry blossoms. Timed to coincide with the rare autumnal bloom of Himalayan cherry blossom trees (Prunus cerasoides), the festival typically takes place in November, transforming the city into a canvas of delicate pink and white. Unlike the spring blossoms of Japan, Meghalaya’s cherry trees bloom in autumn, making it the only place in India, and one of the few in the world, where visitors can witness this spectacle during that season. Streets, parks, and hillsides are lined with these vibrant blooms, especially around Ward's Lake, Polo Grounds, and the Shillong Golf Course. But the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival is more than a visual delight. It’s a multi-day cultural event that blends tradition and modernity.

The festival features live music performances by local and international artists, folk dance and indigenous cuisine stalls, fashion shows, beauty pageants, literary events, Japanese cultural elements, such as Sakura-themed art and exhibitions, wine-tasting, cosplay contests, and street art displays. Whether you're a nature lover, a music enthusiast, or a cultural explorer, the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival offers an unforgettable experience amidst the scenic highlands of Meghalaya.
